Music at Unity Center in Mills River, NC
Long ago, we left behind the traditional definitions of what is "church music" to choose contemporary music as our primary vehicle for celebrating Spirit.
  • Our music is dynamic, upbeat, powerful, and mostly original - written by Lytingale, Dave de la Rosa, and others.
  • Our style of music embraces and includes: folk, rock, jazz, pop, bluegrass, New Age, and a touch of classical.  We very rarely do traditional "church" music, and we pay attention to the ideas expressed in the lyrics.
  • We do not use hymnbooks - we use mostly original songs for group singing, and we project the words using PowerPoint onto a big screen.
  • The philosophy for many of these choices is explained in Growing Your Church Music Program, a book and workshop by Lytingale.

"The music today was transportational.
I often find myself in a different realm when I listen to you sing
or to your band play.
You truly are the best in the land."
- Rev. Pat Jobe

  • We open our service with an upbeat Prelude song (usually featuring our guest artist; often a jazz standard), followed by our welcome song "We Are All Friends Here" (first as an instrumental jam, then with everyone singing the words.)
  • We sing one group song together (or two carols during the Christmas season).
  • Our guest artist chooses a solo to perform in the early part of the service.  A solo leads into the Meditation, and a third solo is performed during the Offering.
  • We sing "The Lord's Prayer" together (in A or G) toward the end of the Meditation time, then sing "We Are Healing" and "Amen" following the prayers.
  • We sing "The Peace Song" at the end of each service.
Our core group of musicians, The Unitic Band, plays every Sunday:

We feature guest musicians almost every Sunday, including...

  • Georgia Pressman (flute),
  • Ruben Orengo (jazz violin),
  • Andy Balent (saxophone),
  • Nancy Glowacki (vocals),
  • Kathryn O'Shea (vocals), and several others.

Members of the Unitic Band are skilled in a variety of styles, including classical, rock, jazz, standards, folk, blues, funk, Latin, contra/Celtic, Broadway, etc.  Most also play with other local bands.

  • The Unitic Band and/or Trilogy (a trio of Lyte, Dave, Joel) also perform for regional retreats & conferences, benefit concerts, and the occasional wedding or party.
  • Lytingale also provides music for many wedding ceremonies.
