Savor the Moment
|
|
From the most ancient of texts to the most contemporary of authors, much has been said about the value of staying in the moment. We are encouraged to stay out of both our past and our future in an attempt to reduce emotional discomfort. But what do we do if after having devoted much time to perfecting this practice that we find ourself faced with the realization that our moment seems empty? Are we to sit patiently in the present with our half-filled glass waiting for it to somehow be filled by the liquid of our daily routine? Or might we be better served, if rather then pondering, "What can my moment offer to me?" we instead asked, "What can I offer to my moment?" When we realize that God's sole medium for interaction in this world is through our individualized consciousness, we can begin to understand that with each breath we breathe we are offering to God the gift of our experience. It is then, like a morsel of food that is being mindfully chewed that we can begin to savor the vibrancy that had been there all along. It is the substance of this process that nourishes our Being. There is nothing more Divine then what we are doing or seemingly not doing right this very moment. Tomorrow will not deliver us any better an opportunity to "fill our cups". The word enthusiasm is formed from the Greek word, Entheos that means "God in us." Therefore, enthusiasm is not something we draw from our life; it is something we offer to it. Joy is an internal state, a state of being that we carry with us into all things. It is not dependent on the external and does not cease to be as our outer condition changes. The lyrics, from a popular song by Seals and Crofts poetically offer us the thought, "Like Columbus in the olden days we must gather all our courage, Sail our ships out on the open sea, Cast away our fears. And all the years will come and go and take us up, always up. I may never pass this way again." We do not have to travel from home to find our "open sea"; it patiently lies before us each and every moment of our life. We need only have the courage to bathe in its splendor.
